Historic U.S. Medical Staff Officer Sword with Inscribed Cane, Both Attributed to a Union Surgeon of the Civil War and Veteran of the Atlanta Campaign

1) Medical Staff Sword, 34 inches overall with a 28 inch straight blade, etched with floral, patriotic, and martial themes on both sides, and "United States Medical Staff" on the obverse ahead of the makers marks. Brass hilt, with fine details in the regulation style, including the "MS' mark over 13 stars on the obverse languet, feathered quillions, and the American eagle on the grip. With a brass sheath. 2) Gold topped engraved walking stick, 34 1/2 inches overall, with an iron tip and nickel silver ferrule on the round ebony shaft, and a 3 1/2 inch long "T" shaped gold head. The head is extensively engraved with floral patterns, and inscribed on multiple sides, with the front marked "BORN/July 4th/1816", the left side marked "Dr. Wm. Grinsted/from his devoted friends/-on his-/72nd Birthday", and the rear marked "OBIT". Research shows William Grinsted (spelled both Grinsted and Grinstead in official records) as having signed on with the United States Volunteers on 27 February 1863 as an Assistant Surgeon, and mustering out on 18 August 1865, with a permanent rank of Surgeon and brevet rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During his war service, Dr. Grinsted spent time as a surgeon in one of the hospitals in occupied Memphis, Tennessee and as the Surgeon in Chief for the 3rd Division of the XX Corps (Hooker's Corps) in the Army of the Cumberland during the Atlanta Campaign. Notes supplied by the consignor state that both the sword and cane were acquired from Grinsted's descendants.

Condition1) Fine. The blade shows a mixed gray patina overall, with pitting towards the tip and clear etching. The sheath shows a few light dents. Hilt is very good, with a fine aged color and sharp detail in the decoration. 2) Very good. Some rust is visible on the tip and dings of the ferrule, with a few light dents and handling marks on the shaft. The head is very good, with minor handling marks and deeply cut engraving.
