Description:

First year production Colt Model 1860 Army revolver with fluted cylinder, 7 1/2-inch barrel and four-screw frame cut for a attachable shoulder stock. These features are typically found only on early production Model 1860 Army revolvers with serial numbers below 8000. The revolver is complete with a mahogany, Hartford case with six compartments lined with red felt. The case contains: (1) sealed tin of 250 Ely percussion caps, (2) packet of six Hazard's "Combustible Envelope Cartridges", (3) "COLTS/PATENT" 'Stand of Flags' powder flask with dark brown lacquer body, gold-plated top, slanted, fixed, charger and fire blue spring (Rapley #F16), (4) blued steel, bow-leg, .44 caliber double cavity bullet mold marked "COLT'S/PATENT" on the sprue cutter and "44H" on the right block, (5) Dixon marked pewter oil bottle, (6) L-shaped screw-driver and nipple wrench. The revolver has the Colt high polish commercial blue finish on the barrel and cylinder. The loading lever, frame and hammer are color casehardened and the brass trigger guard and back strap are silver-plated. The one-piece walnut grip has a high polish 'piano' finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "-ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT HARTFORD CT.-" in one line. "COLTS/PATENT" is stamped in two lines on the left side of the frame. "PATENTED SEPT. 10th 1860" is stamped in one cylinder flute. The full serial number, "1732" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap. All of the visible serial numbers match. Colt manufactured an estimated total of 4000 Model 1860 Army revolvers with fluted cylinders in the serial number 3-8000 range. Factory cased fluted cylinder model 1860 Army revolvers are scarce.

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine. The revolver is all original and retains at least 85% of the original high polish blue and color casehardened finish. The blue finish on the upper left side of the barrel has some flaking and the cylinder has some high point wear. Nearly all of the vivid case colors are present on the loading lever, frame and hammer. The silver plating on the trigger guard and back strap is 95%. There is some light flash pitting on the percussion nipples and hammer but the revolver shows only minimal firing wear. The grip is in excellent plus condition and retains about all of the original piano finish. The serial numbers, barrel and cylinder markings are crisp. The action functions perfectly. The case exterior is in very fine original condition with minimal storage and handling marks. The red velvet lining is in very good condition with some fading, light compression marks and oil stains from contact with the revolver cylinder and butt and two small tears from the revolver front sight blade and hammer. The percussion cap tin is sealed. The flask is in very fine condition and retains 90% of the original dark brown lacquer and gold-plated finish. The bullet mold and screw-driver are in fine condition with about 80% of the blue finish. The cartridge packet is sealed and wear is limited to a small amount of missing wrapping on the front of packet. This is an extraordinary example of a scarce, factory cased, fluted cylinder Colt Model 1860 Army revolver with accessories.
