This early pattern Merwin Hulbert Pocket revolver with a spur trigger, exposed cylinder pin, no loading gate and scooped cylinder flutes. The two-line Merwin Hulbert & Co address appears on the left side of the frame and the "38 CAL" marking is on the right side. The top of the barrel rib is marked "HOPKINS & ALLEN MFG. CO. NORWICH CONN. U.S.A. PAT. JAN. 24/APR. 21. DEC. 15.74. AUG.3.75 JULY 11.76 APR.17.77 PATS. MAR.6.77". The revolver features the distinctive Merwin diamond and scroll/punch dot engraving with a floral and leaf pattern on the sides of the frame and barrel. The left side plate also has the silhouette of a Centurion soldier. The butt is marked "2688", and the left side of the frame under the grip, barrel lug, inside of the left grip panel and rear face of the cylinder are numbered "2804". Nickel finish with casehardened hammer and trigger, and fitted with checkered black hard rubber dog's head grips.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver retains 95% original nickel finish with high point wear and some scattered very small areas of minor flaking. The top strap and cartridge slot on the recoil shield are both heavily battered. The hammer retains most of the faded case colors with a smooth silver gray patina on the balance. The grips are very good with the left panel having sun faded to brown, and overall minor handling marks and crisp checkering. The markings and engraving are clear. The action is fine.
