Description:

This is an example of a US Model 1879 trapdoor Carbine. This carbine has the low arch breech block marked: "U.S./MODEL/1873", with the lock plate marked "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" with no date, first pattern buckhorn rear sight and butt plate with oval trap. The left side of the barrel is stamped with "V/P/Eagle Head/P" proof and inspection marks. The oil-finished walnut stock has the standard sling bar and ring. A faint "SWP/1882" cartouche on the left wrist and a encircled, script, "P" proof mark is stamped behind the trigger plate. The stock comb is stamped with a "42" rack number and it has the standard buttplate with trap compartment that has the three piece cleaning rod and ruptured shell extractors. It has the standard blued parts with case hardened breech block and barrel tang.

Rating Definition:

Very good with 40% of the blue finish on the barrel, receiver and trigger plate assembly with 60% of the case colors remaining overall. The stock is in very good plus condition with a medium brown color overall with handling marks and light pressure dents from use and handling with a visible cartouche and "P" proof. The front sight has been modified by having the center base milled and fitted with a removable front sight blade. A solid presentable U.S. Model 1879 Trapdoor carbine.
