Manufactured in 1936. It is chambered in 9 mm or 9 x 57 Mauser. Although the 9 mm Model 70 rifle was introduced in 1937 and offered until 1963, this caliber was part of a limited production run. George Madis' book, "The Winchester Handbook" states on page 258 that only 22 were sold in 9mm between 1936 and 1943. Mr. Madis' book also states that these unusual calibers "were made for the ballistics test lab, while a few have also been examined which were made on special order." Today the 9 mm is one of the rarest variations of the pre-64 Model 70 rifle offered on today's collector market. Hooded ramp front sight and elevation adjustable rear sight on a barrel marked with the Winchester legend on the left side and the two line address on the right. The Winchester factory proof is stamped on the left side of the barrel and receiver at the breech. Receiver tapped for scope mounting at the front and sight mounting on the left rear side, cloverleaf receiver tang, polished bolt numbered to gun, pre-war safety and sling swivels. The checkered pistol grip stock is fitted with a checkered steel buttplate.

Excellent. The rifle retains 95% plus of the original blue finish showing loss on the buttplate and trigger guard. The stock is fine showing some minor pressure dents and scratches with overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
