Description:

Manufactured in 1939. The rifle is chambered in 7.92 mm. According to George Midas' book "The Winchester Handbook" this profoundly rare caliber, 7.92 was produced in extremely limited quantities and that the majority of these unusual calibers "were made for the ballistics test lab, while a few have also been examined which were made on special order." The Model 70 was a very popular rifle with many custom variations having been manufactured. Whitaker notes that "the versatility of the rifle gave rise to many factory -sponsored or factory-sanctioned experimental chamberings and configurations." Hooded ramp front sight and filler block in the rear dovetail slot on a barrel with the Winchester legend on the left side and the two line address on the right side. The early receiver is tapped for sight mounting at the front and has a Lyman sight (stock not inletted). A Winchester proof is stamped on the barrel (double stamped) and receiver. Polished bolt numbered to the gun, pre-war safety, cloverleaf receiver tang and sling swivels. The checkered pistol grip stock has a checkered steel buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as partially refinished (trigger guard assembly). The balance rifle retains 97% plus of the original blue finish showing some mild thinning on the buttplate. The stock is fine with some minor pressure dents and scratches and some blemishes in the checkering. Mechanically excellent.
