The underside of the barrel is marked with various British proof marks, "48", "9211" and "758". Ahead of the forearm the barrel is marked with two stylish "3"s and "569". The locks, hammers and trigger guard are engraved with fine English scroll and each lock is marked "GEORGE GIBBS". There is a large front sight block, no provisions for a rear sight and integral dovetailed base on the upper tang for a sight. Mounted with a checkered walnut pistol grip wedge secured half stock with a horn forend and grip cap, and a checkered and engraved iron shotgun buttplate and a silver initial oval. The rifle comes in a leather and oak case with a elevation chart for the George Gibbs Metford patent rifle affixed to the inside of the lid. The case has 7 compartments, two with wood lids and contains a leatherette case marked in gold on the lid "METFORD RIFLE SIGHTS/G. GIBBS BRISTOL" containing a mid-range peep sight, two dishes, eight globe sights, two percussion nipples and tool, a separate mid-range tang peep sight, front sight, and large tin containing patches, an oiler and an empty Joyce cap tin.

Rating Definition:

Good. The barrel has a smooth mottled gray patina. The trigger guard retains 20% bright original blue finish with a smooth gray patina on the balance. The lock and hammer have a smooth gray patina with strong faded original case colors in the protected area around the hammer. The refinished stock is also very good with a broken and mended wrist, a few minor scratches, dents and dings. The checkering is crisp. The case is good with the straps and handle absent, and showing some moderate wear and stains on the exterior. The interior shows wear, scratches and dents. The accessories are all good or better, with the rear staff sight being refinished.
