Description:

This lot consists of a pair of cased engraved and gold inlaid French Le Page percussion target pistols with accessories. Le Page was a Parisian firearms manufacturer established in 1717, and run by the same family until 1913. Dumond took over the company in 1913, but retained the illustrious brand name. Firearms by this renowned manufacturer were shown at the International Exhibition in Paris in 1855 (1st Class Medal),1867 (Silver Medal),1878 (Gold Medal) 1889 (Grand Prix), in London in 1851 and 1862 (Prize Medals) and in Vienna 1873 (Medal of Progress). The pistol is signed "Acier Fondu"(French for "Cast Steel") inlaid in gold. The octagonal barrel has multi-groove rifling and fixed sights. A floral scroll design is engraved on the barrel tang, barrel plug, hammer, lock plate, spur trigger guard, barrel wedge escutcheon and ornate butt cap. An etched panel inscribed "Lepage Freres a Paris" is featured on the lock plate. The top of the barrel plug is marked with the number "1" and the rear of the left barrel flat is marked with a Liege "ELG" proof. The pistol is equipped with a single set trigger. The barrel and barrel plug feature a high polished blue finish with the remaining metal surface left bright. The half stock features a high relief carved floral pattern on the grip area and forend with deep flutes on the grip. The varnished wooden case features brass hardware and is lined in red velvet. The case holds both pistols and the following accessories: brass tipped wooden cleaning rod, highly figured wooden mallet, bullet mold, silver Dixon & Son powder flask, highly figured wooden container, screwdriver with highly figured wooden handle with compartment featuring a clamshell ivory screw on lid and horn tipped wooden ramrod. A certificate of appraisal form Spencer Antiques Gallery (dated August 11, 2004) is included with the pistols.

Rating Definition:

Very good as period refinished. The barrel retains 97% of the high polished blue finish showing some very light spotting. The remaining metal surface have a very attractive bright appearance showing some mild pitting on the trigger guard extension. The engraving is crisp. The stock is fine showing a few very scattered mild pressure dents. The carving is crisp. Mechanically fine. The case is fine with refinished wood, a minor crack on the lid, a number of minor handling/storage marks and faded lining showing some high spot wear. A fine example of French dueling pistols handcrafted by renowned gunmaker Le Page.
