This lot consists of a matching pair of engraved Scottish Flintlock pistols with German silver stocks done by Charles Playfair. The lock plate of the pistol is marked "PLAYFAIR" ahead of the hammer. Charles Playfair was a Scottish gunmaker who is recorded to have had business in Aberdeen and Dundee, Scotland. It is believed that the business in Aberdeen started around 1821. Playfair eventually became Bentley & Playfair around 1845 and then later Hollis, Bentley & Playfair. Charles Playfair died in 1876. The smooth bore barrel has an octagon breech section and a dodecagon (12 sided polygon) muzzle section. The round barrel section has a floral scroll engraving which extends to the top barrel flat of the octagon section. An engraved band is featured at the muzzle. The hammer and lock plate are also engraved with the floral scroll pattern. The stock is German silver and it, too, features the floral scroll engraving with the addition of a "v" shaped leaf pattern engraved on the sides of the forearm. The left side of the stock has an iron belt hook. The pistol has an iron ramrod with a floral blossom engraved button head. A threaded touch hole pick is located on the ornately shaped butt.

Rating Definition:
