Description:

This is a very nice cased set of Best Quality English percussion dueling pistols made by Joseph or John Egg c. 1830. The top barrel flat is inscribed "Jh Egg No. 1 Piccadilly London". There is a single thin gold inlaid band around the muzzle and a wide and thin band around the breech end. The breech plug, tang, hammer, lock plate, trigger guard finial, trigger guard, grip strap and buttcap are decorated with fine English scroll and floral designs. The engraving is subtle and flawlessly executed. Dovetail mounted nickel silver half-moon front sight and a fixed rear sight are mounted on the barrel tang. The percussion nipple bolster has a vented platinum insert to reduce recoil. The lock plate is flush fitted and the hammer has a prominent spur. The iron trigger guard has a prominent finger spur. The wedge fastened stock is nicely figured English walnut with flat checkered bag shaped grip with a silver end cap, eight sided thumb plate inlaid on top of the grip area and a iron butt cap. Wooden ramrod with a flared ebony tip. Brown Damascus finish on the barrel, lock plate, hammer, breech plug and tang are casehardened and the trigger guard, trigger, buttcap and screws are niter blue. The stocks have a highly polished oiled piano finish. The pistols are complete in a brass bound highly figured burl walnut case with inlaid brass borders and a rectangular brass plate in the center. The case has a leather outer cover with cloth lining. The French fitted case is lined with red velvet. The case contains a casehardened iron ladle with ebony handle, ball screw, ebony mallet, ebony ramrod with brass tip and handle, gold plated oil bottle, casehardened iron single cavity bullet mold, casehardened hammer spring compression tool, screwdriver with faceted ebony handle, powder flask with adjustable charger, ebony cask for percussion caps and ebony cleaning rod with brass jag. The case has two compartments with lids and brass handles, one compartment contains several lead balls and wadding and the other contains several linen patches. Included with the pistols is a framed hand-tinted early 19th Century (lithograph?) print entitled "PICCADILLY, FROM COVENTRY STREET" which depicts the Egg gunshop. Durs Egg (1748-1832) was one of the best and most esteemed English gun makers. His nephew Joseph (1775-1837) and his son John (1813-1873) were prominent gun makers. Joseph Egg is generally acknowledged to have invented the percussion cap.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The barrel retains nearly all of the original brown finish and Damascus pattern. The hammer and lock plate have nearly all of the attractive dove gray case colors. The ramrod end pipes, trigger guard, butt cap and screws retain 85% of the delicate nitre blue finish. The stock is excellent with a few very minor dents surrounding the wedge escutcheons and on the left stock flat. The case is very good. The lid has a few minor dents and handling marks and one brass inlay on the right side of the case is missing. The russet leather cover is fair with torn closure straps and typical period wear. The case interior is very good with wear limited to compression marks from the pistols and heavy accessories and some very minor wear on the edges of compartments. The case is complete with all of the original accessories. Most of the accessories are excellent and retain close to 95% of the original finish. A few of the ebony handles show minor wear. The print is excellent.
