Description:

This is a very nice Newton Arms rifle that was rebarreled (and probably restocked, although not marked) in the highly desirable ".257 Rem Roberts" caliber. These Newton rifles are some what of an enigma within the collector field, as they were developed by Charles Newton, a lawyer and firearms enthusiast in the early 1914 era. He originally used imported Mauser actions for his rifles, and teamed up with Harry Pope to make the barrels, however the start of WWI cutoff all his supply. He decided to manufacture his own rifle designs. He was based in New York and a total of approximately 2,400 early rifles were made before his company went into receivership. The assets and equipment changed hands twice with another 1,600 manufactured by the later companies with only 4,000 made in total. This rifle as noted, has been rebarreled by the very famous and prestigious company of Griffin & Howe in New York. The medium weight barrel is marked on top "REBARRELED BY GRIFFIN & HOWE NEW YORK", with the left breech end of the barrel engraved ".257 REM. ROB." Although unmarked this caliber was not adopted/released by Remington until 1934, so the barrel work may have taken place shortly there after. The rifle action is unmarked, however it has been very nicely engraved with a fine scroll engraving on the front and rear receiver ring, the sides of the safety/cocking assembly, the trigger guard bow and floor plate, with the tops of the receiver rings have a punch-dot type matte stippling that was drilled and tapped for scope bases (not included) and the left side was also drilled for a side mounted scope base, which was not installed that has three plug screws. It has a low-shaped bolt handle that is checkered on the underside which is numbered 3946. All these Newton rifles were equipped with adjustable double set triggers along with their unique one-piece attached front trigger guard screw/floor plate assembly; both signature items on Newton rifles. These rifles were based on a Mauser type action and were considered very strong as they have two-sets of two locking lugs, almost like a screw mechanism along with an improved rear bolt assembly/cocking piece. As noted this rifle has been restocked in a very nice dark straight grain walnut stock with exceptionally fine line checkering on the sides of the pistol grip and forend area. The stock has a small cheekpiece with a horn-grip cap, ebony forend tip and a black leather covered rubber recoil pad. A very beautiful rifle that is chambered in a very desirable cartridge.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as custom made with 98% plus of the custom rust blue finish overall with minor edge and high spot wear. The stock is also excellent with handling marks. The engraving, while diminutive is very well done. An exceptionally nice looking rifle in a great caliber.
