The top of the barrel is marked with the standard two-line Winchester address ahead of the rear sight, "3" on the underside ahead of the forearm and "22 SHORT" on the top flat at the breech. The serial number is marked on the lower tang. The upper tang is fitted with a long range peep sight. Double set triggers, blue finish with casehardened hammer, breechblock and lever and mounted with a smooth walnut Schnabel forearm with ebony insert and straight grip stock with a silver plated brass Swiss style buttplate. The accompanying Cody letter states the serial number was applied on April 2, 1903 and verifies the 30 inch #3 octagon barrel, 22 short caliber, Schuetzen set trigger, mid range and globe sights and Swiss buttplate, that it was received in the warehouse on May 8, 1903 and shipped to order number 185295 the next day. The letter also states the rifle was repaired and returned on May 7, 1908 to order number 18293.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The rifle retains 80% original blue finish with thinning on the barrel, edge wear, and some minor flaking and areas of smooth gray patina on the receiver. The hammer, breechblock and lever have a smooth gray (darker on the lever) patina with strong original case colors in protected areas. The buttplate retains 80% dark frosted original nickel finish with an aged patina on the exposed brass. The reoiled wood is fine with a couple minor cracks in the stock, a minor crack on the upper left front of the forearm, and overall some minor dents, dings and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
