Description:

This exceptional Model 1903 rifle was manufactured by Springfield Armory c. 1907. The rifle remains in the original issue configuration and has the desirable early features that include: (1) 'high wood', "S" stock with grasping grooves and single reinforcing bolt, (2) hand guard no sight relief cut or spring clips, (3) smooth buttplate, (4) smooth, pointed trigger, (5) first style, small diameter, rear sight windage and binding knobs with center groove, (5) early drift slide with platinum sight line, (6) upper barrel band with high polish blue finish and no "H" hardening mark on the bayonet lug and (7) second style receiver marking with smaller serif letters. The rifle has a high polish blue finish on the barrel, upper and lower barrel bands, trigger guard, floor plate, buttplate and sling swivel. The rear sight base, bolt, bolt sleeve, extractor and follower have a slightly more subdued blue finish. The receiver, cocking piece, safety and "OFF" side of the magazine cut-off have a muted color case-hardened finish. The "ON" side of the cut-off and rear sight leaf are polished bright. The cut-off and safety have serifed markings. The heat lot code "I8" is stamped on the bolt safety lug. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "SA" above the Ordnance 'Shell & Flame' insignia and the date "1-07". The face of the front sight base and front sight have matching index marks. The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with the Ordnance final inspection mark "E.L.H." in a rectangle. An encircled, block, "P" proofmark is stamped on the underside of the stock behind the trigger guard. A small "S" is stamped on the forend tip. The rifle is complete with a M1907 russet leather sling and has the nickel plated oiler in the butt trap.

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine. The rifle remains in original, untouched condition with only minor storage and handling wear. 75% of the original blue and casehardened finish remains. Most of the high polish blue finish is present on the upper and lower barrel bands, trigger guard and floor plate. The bolt retains most of the original polish blue finish. The receiver, magazine cut-off and cocking piece retain most of the muted case colors. The face of the rear sight leaf and the "ON" portion of the cocking piece have most of the original polished finish. The stock and handguard are in excellent condition and have not been oiled or boned. The edges of the grasping grooves are sharp. The final inspection mark and proof mark are crisp. Wear is limited to some minor handling and storage marks consistent with a 107 year old rifle. This is an excellent, untouched, example of an early production Springfield Model 1903 rifle. Very few of these rifle survived in original condition and fine, original, early production M1903 rifles are very scarce.
