Description:

From 1895 to 1903 a number of "US" marked Single Action Army revolvers, like this one, were returned to either the Colt factory or Springfield Armory where they were modified (to 5 1/2 inch barrel length), dismantled and refinished, often with little regard to which gun the refinished parts came from, resulting in a mix of serial numbers and markings. These revolvers have a 5 1/2 inch barrel, and they were finished with a casehardened frame and blue cylinder, grip frame and barrel. The serial numbers are mixed on these altered models and they were remarked by inspectors of the era. This revolver is serial numbered "61637" on the frame, "6909" on the trigger guard, and "115492" on the back strap. There is a "D.F.C." and "P" on the underside of the barrel ahead of the cylinder pin. The rear cylinder face is marked with a "K", "C" and "M", and there is an "A" below the serial number on the trigger guard. This revolver was subsequently then custom engraved with floral scroll designs with a punch dot background on the barrel, frame, cylinder flats, trigger guard and back strap. The top of the barrel is marked with the one-line address and the left side of the frame is marked with the three-line, three-patent dates followed by "US". The revolver has nickel-plating on the barrel, cylinder, frame and grip straps, and gold on the hammer, loading gate, trigger and ejector rod housing. Fitted with smooth pearl grips. The accompanying factory letter verifies the caliber and blue finish at the time of shipment with the barrel length and grips as "Not Listed" and it was shipped as 1 of 150 to the U.S. Government Inspector at the Colt factory on December 23, 1880. The remarks state that the revolver was returned for factory refurbishing and subsequently reshipped to the Commanding Officer, Springfield Armory, Springfield, Massachusetts on May 18, 1903. The revolver comes in a contemporary Colt branded wooden case with blue velvet fitted lining. In the case is a plaque which reads "COLE AGEE". There is no paperwork with the revolver to verify Cole Agee engraved this revolver.

Rating Definition:

Very good as custom embellished and plated with 99% of the chrome and gold finished remaining. The grips are very good with a blemish on the upper left side and light handling marks. The markings and engraving are clear. The action is fine. The case is very good with some scratches and nicks on the exterior, and some mild contact wear on the lining.
