Description:

Manufactured in 1963 (receiver). This example of a pre-64 Model 70 is fitted with a featherweight barrel chambered for the 284 Winchester caliber. This caliber is not listed in Dean Whitaker's study, THE MODEL 70 WINCHESTER 1937-1964. The Model 70 was a very popular rifle with many custom variations having been manufactured. Whitaker notes that "the versatility of the rifle gave rise to many factory-sponsored or factory-sanctioned experimental chamberings and configurations." Factory records are, as Whitaker states, "rather scanty or, in some cases, non-existent." Even today there could still be undocumented variations of the Model 70. The barrel was manufactured without sights and is marked with the Winchester legend on the left side. The Winchester factory oval proof is stamped on the barrel and receiver at the breech. The receiver is tapped for scope/sight mounting. Polished bolt numbered to gun, late safety, straight receiver tang and sling swivels. The high comb pistol grip stock features checkering and a checkered black plastic buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as professionally refurbished/restored. The rifle retains nearly all of the blue finish showing a series of minor handling on the floor plate near the catch. The stock is very fine with a few minor pressure dents and crisp deep checkering. Mechanically excellent.
