Description:

This is an example of one of 8,000 Model 1864 Joslyn breechloading carbines purchased by the Ordnance Department form the Joslyn Fire Arms Company of Stonington, Connecticut. The barrel is fitted with a three-leaf, folding, rear sight. The lock plate is marked: "JOSLYN FIRE ARMS CO./STONINGTON CONN/1864" ahead of the hammer. The rear of the breechblock is marked with the three line 1861 and 1862 patent dates and the matching serial number is located on the top of the breechblock and on the upper tang. Mounted with a smooth one-piece straight grip walnut stock with two faint inspector's cartouches on the left side above the ring bar and "US" on the buttplate tang.

Rating Definition:

Good. Traces of blue and case colors remain in protected areas with, the balance turning a smooth brown. The stock is very good with moderate dings and dents, and several small slivers out of the top edge of the forearm, missing the barrel band. Mechanically good.
