This is an example of a Second Model Merrill Civil War carbine. The late style lock plate features the Second Model markings: "J.H.MERRILL BALTO/PAT JULY 1858,/APL.9. MAY 21-28-61" under the bolster, eagle/shield marked in front of the hammer and "1864" marked behind the hammer. The breech latch is marked with the Merrill name and patent date, along with the serial number. The barrel proofs are not visible. Manufactured without a patch box. Brass barrel band, trigger guard and buttplate. Mounted on a straight grip stock with a saddle ring bar and ring mounted on the left side flat. Merrill carbines were issued to cavalry regiments in New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Wisconsin and Indiana.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The iron components have been cleaned and touched up with browning solution with light pitting overall. The hammer has a smooth dark gray patina. The brass components have also been cleaned and are beginning to age again. The wrist has been repaired and a couple hairline cracks are near the lock plate, otherwise the revarnished stock has some minor dings and scratches, and a few minor dents. There are some minor gouges mostly at the toe area. The markings are weak, but legible. Mechanically fine.
