Description:

Produced in 1861. German silver blade front and hammer notch rear sights, with the one line New York address on the barrel, "COLTS/ PATENT" on the left side of the frame, and the Texas Navy scene on the cylinder. Matching numbers on the barrel, frame, wedge, cylinder pin, cylinder and grip straps. Smooth one-piece grips with a cartouche on the left side. A lanyard ring has been installed on the butt, with "Pierson" engraved on the front strap. Notes from the consignor attribute the engraving to John Frederick Pierson; a native-born New Yorker who joined up with the New York State National Guard in 1857 as an enlisted man and began working his way up the ranks. At the outbreak of the Civil War he joined the First New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, where he would become a Brevet Brigadier General (permanent Colonel), get a horse shot out from under him at Glendale, get shot in the chest at Chancellorsville, and finally captured during the Battle of Bristow Station. Surviving his captivity, Pierson entered the private sector, and by the time of his passing in 1932 was the president of multiple groups and businesses in and around Ramapo, New York. His obituaries also attribute him as the oldest surviving Union General Officer at that time.

Rating Definition:

Good. The steel shows a mixed brown patina overall, with scattered handling marks and a few areas of pitting. The hammer screw is a modern replacement. The trigger guard shows a bright brass color overall. Grips are also good, with some rounding at the butt and mild dents. Trigger spring needs adjustment, otherwise mechanically good.
