Description:

These Trapdoor Forager shotguns had a total production of approximately 1,376 and were manufactured from 1880 to 1885. According to Flayderman's these shotguns were serial numbered in their own range of 1 to 1376, however it appears that number goes up a little higher. They were manufactured for use by government hunters and scouts at Western military outposts. The shotguns were issued at the rate of two per company with the last known issued in 1906 in Alaska. Brass bead front sight with a "1881" marked breechblock, and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the eagle shield motif marked lock plate, (absent of the usually found 1873 date third line). Casehardened breechblock and barrel tang with the remaining metal surfaces blue. Mounted with a one-piece straight grip half stock with a steel "U.S." marked buttplate, a circled script "P" behind the trigger guard and 1885 dated cartouche on the left wrist.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The breech end of the barrel retains 30% of the original blue finish with a smooth brown patina on the balance. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray and dark patina. The stock is also very good with several moderate small dents, minor dings and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is fine. This U. S. Springfield Forager is well above average condition for this model!
