Description:

This is a U.S. Springfield Model 1888 ramrod bayonet trapdoor rifle manufactured in 1892. This was the last trapdoor rifle variation which had the unique sliding, ramrod-bayonet. They were fitted with a one-piece trigger guard, serrated trigger and butt compartment. The lock plate is marked with Eagle/Shield motif and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer. The low arch breechblock is marked "U.S./MODEL/1884". The left rear of the barrel has the "V/P/Eagle head/P" proof and inspection marks and the letter "A" is marked on top of the barrel at the breech. The barrel is fitted with the Buffington rear sight with windage and elevation adjustments. There is a sling swivel mounted on the front of the trigger guard and front barrel band. Blue finish with casehardened breechblock and barrel tang. Mounted with a one-piece full oil-finished black walnut stock with a "SWP/1892." cartouche on the left wrist, circled script "P" directly behind the lower tang. The top of the buttplate is stamped "US" and carries a rack number of "124". It is complete with a ruptured shell extractor, a Springfield Armory field tool and a front sight cover.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 60% of the blue finish overall fading and spotting on the top and sides of the barrel with 50% of the case colors on the breechblock. The stock is also fine with a nice original dark oil finish with numerous light handling marks overall, from field use with clear cartouches and proofs. Mechanically excellent. A nice late production Model 1888 trapdoor rifle.
