Description:

This example appears to be from the mid 19th century in the style of the early 16th century. These "frog mouth" helms also known as a Stechhelm (stinging helmet) emerged in the early 1400s. They were used for jousting or the Gestech as it was also known. This example is composed of three large forged pieces that are riveted together. The front portion has half of a sturdy hinge for attachment to the breastplate and the back portion has a large lug for attachment to the back plate. The top piece has a square hole at the very top along with two sets of brass floral bosses with a small hole in the center for attaching the padded cap on either side. The rear portion has a slot on each side for a leather strap with three heart shaped piercings just behind them and four brass floral bosses with small holes for attaching the padded cap. There is a riveted "U" shaped lug on each side for attaching the pauldrons or arm defenses. There are embossed ridges on the top piece and back piece that come together and terminate at the top of the neck. There is a simple engraved line design between the embossed ridges. The pieces are not perfectly aligned with the ocularium being slightly wider on the left side. The point on the top piece is not perfectly aligned with the point on the front piece. Weighs 14 1/2 pounds.

Rating Definition:

Good, there is a brown patina overall with areas of minor pitting, a few smaller areas of deeper pitting and scattered scratches and light dings that appear to be from use. This helm has been heavily polished to remove pitting. The floral bosses have a dark patina. The interior has a mostly brown patina with some areas of oxidation.
