Description:

Dovetail mounted blade front sight and an adjustable notch rear sight mounted to a quarter rail, with a Swiss-style bayonet lug on the right side of the barrel, "crown/P&C" stamped on the right side of the receiver and "RAMEAU 44" on the left. The breech is equipped with a trapdoor style casehardened breechblock, which is secured in place with a locking bar controlled by a "monkey tail" style lever which runs along the top of the wrist. The lock plate is fitted with engraved screws, but shows no makers markings. Smooth straight wrist stock with 2 barrel bands, a semi-fancy trigger guard, sling swivels and a half checkered buttplate. The origin of this rifle is unknown; Rameau has not been identified. Consignor notes state that there is an "ACIER FONDU" steel mark concealed on the barrel, and the general design bears resemblance to a number of trapdoor rifles developed by the Belgians in the late 1860s.

Rating Definition:

Very good, with 40% of the faded brown finish overall, showing a few areas of mild pitting and light handling marks overall. Strong case colors are visible on the protected areas of the lock and breechblock, with a mixed brown patina on the remainder. Stock is fine, with some mild dents and dings. Mechanically very good.
