Description:

This brass barreled flintlock blunderbuss was manufactured by Parker of Holborn, an area of central London. The brass barrel has a 1 1/4 inch opening, two British proofs stamped on the upper left flat and "HOLBORN" stamped on the top flat. A 12 1/4 inch snap bayonet is mounted on top of the barrel with the release on the barrel tang. The lock plate is marked "PARKER" ahead of the hammer and a floral engraving appears at the rear. The ramrod pipes, side plate, trigger guard and buttplate are also brass. A light engraving is featured on the buttplate tang, side plate and trigger guard. The trigger guard has an acorn finial. The straight grip stock has two barrel wedges and checkering on the wrist. The blunderbuss has a horn tipped wooden ramrod. William Parker (circa 1790-1840) was a well known London gunmaker who specialized in brass barrel blunderbusses and flintlock holster pistols and manufactured flintlock and percussion pistols for the London Police. From 1840 to 1850 the company was known as Parker, Field & Co. and the name changed to Parker Field & Sons in 1850 and lasted until 1886.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The brass has a smooth patina showing areas of a dark patina. The lock and hammer have a smooth dark patina. The stock is very fine with a long hairline crack near the buttplate tang with a couple shorter hairline cracks and a number of minor pressure dents and scratches. The checkering is crisp overall. Mechanically fine. An attractive example of a brass barreled flintlock blunderbuss with snap bayonet manufactured by a prominent London gunmaker.
