A) Blakemore & Son Large Bore Percussion Fowling Piece

Description:

The scroll engraved lock plate is marked "BLAKEMORE & SON." The scrollwork extends to the trigger guard, buttplate tang, barrel tang and breech plug with a floral pattern on the hammer. The fowling piece has an approximately 6 1/2 gauge barrel. The top of the barrel has a large engraved star burst pattern at the rear. The barrel has a single bead front sight and a solid iron under rib. The varnished stock features a checkered wrist and two barrel wedges. The wooden ramrod has a horn tip. Blakemore & Son was a London gunmaker who operated circa 1867 to 1897.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The fowling piece has a smooth dark patina. Some minor pitting is present (mostly on the trigger guard). The repaired, revarnished stock is good with some minor handling marks and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically fine.

Description:

The fowling piece has an approximately 6 1/4 gauge barrel. The top of the barrel plug is stamped with what appears to be a partially visible date ("186") and the lock plate has traces of an illegible marking. The barrel has a blade front sight. The smooth half stock has a single barrel wedge and a flat brass buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Poor. The fowling piece has a mottled gray patina with some very scattered minor pitting. The barrel under rib is missing. The repaired stock is fair with a couple cracks on the forearm and some scattered minor handling marks. Mechanically fine.
