Description:

This 19th century Japanese matchlock has a round flat top barrel featuring an octagon cannon-type muzzle. The barrel is decorated with silver inlaid flower and oriental motif designs. Brass lock and trigger, and iron hammer. The front sight is absent and the rear sight is an iron block. Wooden ramrod and mounted with a smooth hardwood stock with a small brass buttcap, a Japanese character on the left side of the butt and a five point star on the left wrist.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel has a dark brown patina with some minor pitting and oxidation. All of the silver inlay remains and has darkened considerably with age. The brass components retain most of the black japanned finish with an aged patina on the exposed brass. The stock is good with some gouges on the butt, a small piece of an escutcheon absent, and scattered minor dings, dents and scratches. The action needs work as it does not always function.
