This is an example of a very scarce pre-war 1904 model Large Nambu pistol. Commonly referred to as a Papa Nambu, these pistols were a continuation of the earlier Grandpa versions of the Nambu pistols and are properly without provisions for a shoulder stock. Approximately 7,100 were produced before production changed to the later standard Type 14 model. This pistol was produced under an Army contract and so marked with the Kanji characters on the left side of the frame. The top of the receiver has the Kokura cannonball proof and the right side of the frame has the Kanji model marking over the serial number. Adjustable tangent rear sight on top of the receiver calibrated from 100-500 meters, fixed inverted "V" front sight, and the grip safety on the front of the grip strap. The bolt is numbered to match, with "628" on the magazine. With a brown leather clamshell holster, canvas and leather lanyard, and a small box of ammunition.

Fine, with 60% of the faded Arsenal refurbished blue finish, showing areas of brown and gray patina, light spotting and handling marks, and bright edge wear. The coarse Arsenal checkered grips are good, with some mild dents and scuffs. The holster shows minor scratches and verdigris buildup, and the box is repaired with tape. Mechanically very good.
