Manufactured circa 1903. Single brass bead sight on the smooth concave solid rib marked "DICKSON & SON EDINBURGH" with fine engraved scrollwork at the breech and on the doll's head extension. 4 inch chambers with extractor. The barrel flats are marked with a "crown" over "BP", "BV" and "NP" proofmarks, "NITRO PROOF" "2 3/4 OZ.", "9/2" "8/C" in a diamond, "CHOKE" and "4". The water table is marked with the matching serial number and a "crown/BV" proofmark on the right side and a "crown/BV" and "J.D&S" on the left side. The forearm hardware is also numbered to the gun. The receiver is engraved with floral scroll designs and rose bouquets. The floral scroll design extends to the trigger guard, break lever, the lower receiver plate and forearm hardware. The receiver is casehardened and the remaining parts are blue. Mounted with a multi-point checkered highly figured deluxe walnut splinter forearm and straight grip stock with a leather covered recoil pad and silver initial oval. Length of pull is 14 inches. The shotgun comes in a hard leather case with brass corner protectors, leather straps and a leather carrying handle. The lining is red felt and there is a John Dickson & Son label affixed to the inside of the lid. In the case is a two-piece wooden cleaning rod, two bore brushes, a chamber brush, a bore mop, a nickel oiler, a patch cutter, two brass snap caps and 4 brass 8 gauge casings. 4 inch chambers, length of pull: 14 1/8 inches, drop at comb: 1 9/16 inches, drop at heel: 2 1/8 inches, cast-off: 1/4 inches, weight: 11lbs 10oz.

Fine as period refurbished with 98% blue finish remaining, showing some mild thinning on the barrels and break lever, and a few minor handling marks. The receiver has a smooth silver gray patina. The wood shows a few scattered minor dings and handling marks. The recoil pad has hardened with age and shows some minor cracking beginning to develop. The checkering is crisp. The markings and engraving are clear. Mechanically fine. The case is very good with a few minor dents on the outside of the lid and all the accessories are excellent, (most never used), with an aged patina on the brass shotgun casings. 8 gauge English double barrel shotguns are seldom encountered!
