Description:

This is an exceptional example of a late WWII Springfield Armory M1C sniper rifle with a Lyman M82 telescopic sight, correct "K-Line" russet leather cheek piece and original M2 flash hider. The M1C sniper rifles were originally developed in mid-late 1944 and were also used in Korea by both the U.S. Army and USMC. This is a late WWII rifle that still retains its original WWII marked barrel. It has the standard receiver markings with the barrel marked: 1-"S-A-2-45" with the breech in the white. It is fitted with the various parts marked as follows: unmodified operating rod marked: "D35382-9-SA", bolt marked "D28287-19-SA/B14", trigger housing marked "D28290-14-SA", hammer "C46008-7 SA", safety "SA-11", late war type III locking bar, rear sight, stamped trigger guard and wide base gas cylinder, round top gas cylinder lock and a four-slot gas plug. The scope base or bracket is unnumbered and is held on with three screws and two taper pins. This rifle has an original WWII all blue G&H mount that has the Griffin & Howe markings on top, numbered "3373263" on the back side. The mount is fitted with an original all blue M82 telescopic sight, that has the correct post reticle and is roll-stamped on the left side "TELESCOPE M82/SERIAL NO. 36094/STOCK NO. 84374". The telescope is complete with the rubber eyepiece, sliding sun shade and windage and elevation knob covers with part numbers on the top. The russet leather lace-on cheekpiece is an original late WWII version originally issued with M1C rifles that is marked "K-Line" on top. It is also fitted with an early milled flash hider that is marked "HIDER, FLASH M2". The rifle is fitted with an original WWII stock that is stamped on the left side with a late WWII boxed "S.A./N.F.R./Crossed Cannon" cartouche, circled "P" firing proof on the pistol grip. Nearly all of the M1C sniper rifles were rebuilt by Springfield Armory or other Ordnance facilities during the Korean Conflict. Most of the M1C rifles were destroyed by the Army during the 1980s and have only been reimported by the CMP. Included with the rifle is a letter from David H. McClain, who states that the receiver of this arm was one of 7971 Springfield receivers given over to Griffin & Howe for upgrade to M1C's, as well as a copy of a bill of sale that includes the accessories and McClain letter.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as arsenal refurbished, with 90% of the green parkerized finish overall with edge and high spot wear with finish loss on the front and rear of the bolt. The stock and handguards are all in fine condition with minimal handling marks that has been lightly arsenal refurbished that now shows a light colored brown finish with a slightly darker finish on the handguards. The cartouches and proofs are all clear and distinct. This rifle has had some light restoration by the addition of some of the correct original parts. The scope and mount retain 95% of their blued finish overall with excellent optics. The markings are clear and sharp on the side of the tube. There is one small dent in the side of the tube directly over the markings that doesn't affect the function of the scope and the view is also unaffected. A very nice looking late WWII M1C sniper rifle rig.
