Description:

John Unertl developed and manufactured these scopes in 1940-41 under contract for the USMC. The scopes had 8x magnification and were originally intended to be mounted on Springfield Armory Model 1903 National Match rifles that were modified by USMC/Navy armorers. These sniper rifles were used in early 1942-43 during the initial invasions of the Japanese held islands. They were very effective at the start of the war, however, their higher magnification became a hindrance in the close jungle fighting. After WWII these scopes remained in USMC inventory and were again used very successfully throughout Korea, and then again in Vietnam from 1962-68 where they were mounted on Winchester Model 70 target rifles. There were approximately 2,800 of these scopes manufactured this example being a fairly late example. The rear of the scope tube is roll marked "J. Unertl/ USMC-SNIPER/2528" and it is marked with "14" on the outside reticle holding ring indicating 14x magnification. This scope is accompanied with an original WWII issue micarta scope can, dark green scope mounts and screw on aluminum lens caps.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as Arsenal upgraded to 14x magnification. 98% of the high quality blue finish remains with some scratches, dings and wear. There is some minor pitting and scratches under the finish. The optics are clear and the reticle intact. The scope can is fine with the three brass guide posts smashed in along with scattered scratches, dings and minor edge wear.
