The saber has a 34 inch single fuller blade, etched and gold washed with floral, patriotic, and martial themes, with "U.S." on the left and "Nathan William MacChesney" on the right. Gilt finished hilt, with deeply cut scroll designs and a grooved horn grip. With a gilt fitted nickel scabbard, with silver "NWMC" and "USA" monogram panels, a golden Seal of Illinois on the suspension band, and the legend "Presented to/Nathan William MacChesney/Lieutenant Colonel U.S./Army", followed by "American Expeditionary Forces, France Brigadier General Illinois National Guard by U.S. Government War Exposition U.S. Committee on Public Information Chicago Association of Commerce and Illinois State Council of Defense in Recognition of His Fine Spirit and Efficient, Invaluable, and Distinguished Services Chicago 1918". A native son of Chicago, MacChesney served in the Spanish-American War, founded the law firm of MacChesney and Becker, served as Special Assistant Attorney General of the United States, Special State's Attorney for Illinois, and President of the Illinois Bar before returning to service for World War One. 2) Regulation pattern Model Officer's 1902 saber, with a 33 3/4 inch blade, with decorative panels on each side, "IRONCUTTER" on the right ricasso, and the inscription "BRIGADIER GENERAL NATHAN WILLIAM MacCHESNEY/ILLINOIS NATIONAL GUARD 1893-1917, UNITED STATES ARMY 1917-1919/AMERICAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCES FRANCE". On the left side near the tip. Nickel plated scabbard, with a grooved horn grip. 3) Regulation Model 1902 Officer's Saber with a 30 inch single fuller blade. The blade is etched on both sides and has an etched presentation panel on each side of the tip; the left side is etched "1st Lieut. Harry Mase Keiser, Co. H. 125th Infantry U.S. Army. Commissioned Fort Sheridan ILL. Nov. 27-1917/Killed In Action Les Jomblets Woods Cierges France, July 31-1918/PRESENTED ON HIS WEDDING DAY/BY HIS COUSIN COLONEL NATHAN WILLIAM MacCHESNEY, DECEMBER 8 1917" and the right is etched "DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS/Awarded Posthumously By Commanding General U.S.A./AMERICAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCES, FRANCE.". Nickel plated hilt and scabbard, with a grooved ebony grip. Lieutenant Keiser was married on December 4, 1917 in a ceremony performed in then-Colonel MacChesney's home, 4 days before his deployment to France, and was awarded the DSC posthumously by General Pershing for his actions near Chateau-Thierry. The DSC citation states that he continued to lead his unit even after being wounded by machine-gun fire.
