This is a nice example of an early Merkel shotgun with a matte solid rib with single ivory bead sight, 3 inch chambers, screw in choke system and auto ejectors. Kersten cross bolt, cocking indicators, double triggers, and tang mounted manual safety. The action and side plates are engraved with floral scroll patterns with a zigzag border on the side plates. The underside is marked "GEBRUDER MERKEL/SUHL". The left rear of the barrel is marked "GEBRUDER MERKEL/SUHL". Casehardened action, forearm hardware and side plates with blue remaining parts and mounted with a multi-point checkered three-piece walnut forearm and round knob pistol grip stock with an adjustable Trapdude solid recoil pad and "D" inscribed silver initial oval. Length of pull is currently 15 3/4 inches.

Excellent. The barrels retain 98% original blue finish with some thinning near the muzzle and a few minor scratches. The trigger guard and break lever retain 95% original blue finish with some thinning from normal handling. The action and side plates have a gray patina with strong traces of original case colors in the protected area around the trigger. The wood has been freshened with a coat of varnish and altered, (see above) and remains very good with some minor handling marks and crisp checkering. The engraving and markings are clear and crisp. Mechanically fine.
