Description:

Manufactured circa 1886. The solid barrel rib features a single bead front sight and is marked "JOHN DICKSON & SON, EDINBURGH" with engraved scrollwork at the breech. The barrels feature 3 1/4 inch chambers and an extractor. The barrels are marked with the numbers "4227" and "6694". The barrel flats are marked "10 NITRO PROOF 1 3/4 OZ" and "10/c" inside a diamond followed by "3 1/4" CHOKE" along with "crown/BV", "crown/BP" and "crown/NP" proofs. The water table is marked "4227" and "JD&S" along with "crown/BV" and "crown/V" proofs. The forearm hardware, frame, lock plates, hammers, trigger guard and under lever feature an extensive and well executed English scroll engraved pattern. The lock plates are marked "JOHN DICKSON & SON". The forearm has the number "6694", which is one of the numbers stamped on the barrels. The nicely figured forearm and straight grip stock are checkered and the buttstock is fitted with a plain steel flat buttplate and has a blank German silver initial oval on the underside. Length of pull is 14 3/4 inches. The case is oak, is lined in green felt and has brass corner protectors. The inside of the lid has a John Dickson & Son 63 Princes Street Edinburgh label (John Dickson & Son moved to the premises at 63 Princes circa 1849 and remained there until 1929.) and a previous owner label marked "Charles Gordon, Esq." Although Charles Gordon remains unidentified at the time of writing this description, a simple internet search has discovered interesting possibilities such as English first-class cricketer Charles Steward Gordon (1849-1930) and Scottish Liberal politician Charles Gordon, 11th Marquess of Huntly (1847-1937). There is also British Major-General Charles George Gordon, but he is killed in 1885, a year before the shotgun was manufactured. Several accessories are housed in the case and include the following: a two piece cleaning rod with two brush attachments, a Hawksley chamber brush with horn handle, a brass reloading tool, a brass James Dixon & Son shot measure with horn handle, a Hawksley silver powder measure with horn handle, an oiler, two wrenches, two screwdrivers and packing rod. 3 1/4 inch chambers, bore diameter: R- .776 L- .778, bore constriction: R- .024 L- .035, min. bbl thickness: R- .038 L- .035, length of pull: 14 5/8 inches, drop at comb: 1 1/4 inches, drop at heel: 2 1/2 inches, cast-off: 1/4 inches, weight: 9lbs 1oz.

Rating Definition:

Fine as period refurbished overall. The barrels retain nearly all of the blue finish with a couple minor scratches. The buttplate and trigger guard retain 80% of the blue finish. The action has a bright appearance showing traces of case colors in the protected areas with a crisp engraving. The wood is excellent with some scattered minor handling marks and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically fine. The case is fine with long cracks on the lid and some high spot wear on the lining.
