Description:

The top of the barrel is marked "J.M. Caswell Lansingburgh NY" and the lock plate is marked "R.S. CLARK/EXTRA". Both of these have been seen on other rifles made by this maker. However, this example is much heavier than many of those seen. Lansingburgh was a town on the Hudson River and became part of the City of Troy in 1900. During the late nineteenth century the town was home to President Chester A. Arthur as a boy and Herman Melville when he wrote his first two books. The rifle has scroll engraving on the rear section of the barrel at the muzzle along with a border and a combination of geometric, floral and scroll engraving on the other components. It is fitted with blade front and notch rear sights and is mounted on a maple half-stock with checkering at the wrist and German silver accents including a round patch box on the right side of the butt, trigger guard with pineapple style finial, initial plates, a fox on the raised cheek rest, a stag head on the left rear of the butt and an ornate crescent buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The rifle has a brown patina on the barrel with some oxidation and a dark gray patina on the lock plate. The other components are mostly bright with a slight golden hue. The buttplate has some spots and some wear. The stock is in good condition as repaired with a professionally installed splice of wood, forward of lock plate, partially smoothed checkering, some hairline cracks extending forward from the side plate screw and a few minor dings and scratches. There is a repair ahead of the lock plate. Mechanically needs some work.
