New Haven Arms Co. Volcanic Pistol 31 Volcanic
Volcanic No. 1 Lever Action Pocket Pistol manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company circa 1857-1860. The pistol has a silver-plated frame. The frame is decorated with the open scroll work used on factory engraved Volcanic firearms and large United States shields in the center of both side plates. The two-piece walnut grips have a high polish piano finish. The pistol has the distinctive brass frame with octagon barrel and integral magazine and finger hole loading lever. The barrel/magazine are blued. The hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened. The barrel has a steel front sight and a fixed rear sight is mounted in a dovetail on the frame. The hammer has a knurled spur. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "NEW HAVEN CONN./PATENT FEB. 14.1854" in two lines. These markings were adopted by the newly formed New Haven Arms Company after Oliver Winchester reorganized the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company in April 1857. The serial number "1568" is stamped on the lower left side of the frame underneath the grip and "568" is stamped on the inside of both grips. The Volcanic pistols and carbines are extremely important firearms. They represent a key step in the development of both self-contained cartridges and repeating, magazine firearms. The toggle lever action utilized on Volcanic pistols and carbines eventually evolved into the action used on the successful Henry rifle and the Winchester Model 1866, 1873 and 1876 rifles and carbines. The reorganization of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., into the New Haven Arms Co., was the beginning of Oliver Winchester's involvement in firearms manufacturing and the beginning of the Winchester Repeating Arms Co.

New Haven Arms Co. Volcanic Pistol 31 Volcanic
Volcanic No. 1 Pocket Pistol manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co., circa 1859. This diminutive lever action pistol has a 3 1/2 inch octagon barrel with integral six-shot magazine and distinctive brass frame. The barrel has a pinch-top front sight and a fixed rear sight mounted in a dovetail on the framer. The legend "NEW HAVEN CONN. /PATENT FEB. 14. 1854" is roll-stamped in two lines on the top barrel flat. The serial number, "1411" is stamped on the left side of the butt beneath the grips and on the inside of both grips. The barrel is blued, the hammer and finger-ring lever are color casehardened and the two-piece walnut grips have a high polish piano finish. The omission of the "VOLCANIC" markings on the barrel indicates that the pistol was manufactured after Oliver Winchester assumed control of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., and reorganized it as the New Haven Arms Co., in April 1857. The New Haven Arms Co. manufactured approximately 850 No. 1 Pocket Pistols between 1857 and 1862.

Rare Jennings Breechloading Rifle
Manufactured by Robbins and Lawrence at their Windsor, Vermont, factory circa 1850 to 1851. It is believed that less than 1,000 of all variations were made, despite an original order for 5,000 repeating rifles. This particular variation was an original breech loading, single shot, factory converted or made from Jennings Repeating Rifle parts. The rifle utilized a "Rocket Ball" cartridge which was loading through the right side of the frame. A ring trigger operates the breech and automatic pill primer device. The magazine tube was made smaller in diameter and used for carrying a cleaning/ramrod. This example has no visible maker markings. The top of the barrel at the breech and top of the buttplate have a light scroll engraving. The rifle has been converted to a muzzle loading rifle. Note that many of these original breech loading rifles were later altered by local gunsmiths to muzzle loading. Smooth straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate and a blank silver initial oval on the left side double stamped "MOD". The development of the Jennings rifle brought together the talents of Henry, Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson (later Smith & Wesson). These men would ultimately achieve great historic developments in lever action repeating firearms. Also of note is the firm's foreman, B. Tyler Henry, who would go on to play a major role in the development of the rifle and ammunition for the Volcanic, New Haven and Winchester arms firms. Only recently has Jennings Rifles received significant historical studies.

Winchester 1866 Carbine 44 RF
This is a fine example of quite possibly a factory engraved nickel plated Winchester Model 1866 saddle ring carbine that was manufactured in 1871 (we have no factory record available to us). The receiver, tangs and bottom of the cartridge carrier are decorated with floral scroll designs. The front and rear sides of the receiver have a geometric border, and there is a scallop border on the front and rear of the receiver. In addition, there is a squirrel in the center on the left front and a deer in a floral vine bordered oval on the right side. The buttplate tang has the same floral scroll design. The deer scene is very similar to the example on page 97 of THE BOOK OF WINCHESTER ENGRAVING that is attributed to Conrad Ulrich who was known to use a wide variety of border designs. The top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight is marked "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEWHAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16.1860". The serial number is marked on the lower tang. There is a small "L.C." or "I.C." mark on the lower tang. There is a dovetailed blade front sight mounted on the front barrel band and a fixed iron rear sight. Saddle ring and staple on the left side of the receiver, all nickel finish and mounted with a smooth nicely figured walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate with compartment (cleaning rod not included) and sling swivels.

Dodge (1854-1938) was a detective/undercover agent for Wells Fargo for many years prior to openly working for the company and was famous for solving crimes including the infamous Bisbee Massacre, numerous stage coach hold ups, and train robberies. He also helped pursue the Doolin and Dalton gangs. Dodge's diaries were key in the writing of "Life and Times of Wyatt Earp" and he was reportedly responsible for recommending Earp be hired as a stage coach guard. The included consignor research contains copies of many interesting documents including transcriptions of letters detailing stage coach attacks/holdups and Dodge's relationship with the Earps. Dodge retired to his ranch in Texas in 1917. The rifle is mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.

Civil War Production Henry Lever Action Rifle
Henry Lever Action Rifle manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co., c. November 1864. The rifle has the distinctive brass receiver and buttplate with octagon barrel and integral, 15-shot, magazine. The barrel has a nickel-silver, square back, front sight blade and folding leaf rear sight. The rear sight has a 900 yard center notch and elevator bar stop screw at the top of the sight. The magazine has the second style, large diameter, brass follower and the bottom of the receiver has the beveled, follower cut-out. The receiver lacks the alternate rear sight dove-tail found on early production Henry rifles. The straight grain, American walnut stock is fitted with a factory sling swivel on the left side. The left side of the barrel has a screw-fastened loop for a sling hook. The second style buttplate with sharply pointed heel and hinged trap door. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the second style, two-line legend: "HENRY'S PATENT.OCT.16.1860/ MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS.CO.NEWHAVEN. CT.". This legend is slightly larger than the marking found on early mid-production Henry rifles and features all serifed letters. The rifle serial number, "7252" is located: (1) on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver, (2) on the left side of the lower tang beneath the stock, (3) in the upper tang inlet of the stock and (4) on the inside of the buttplate. All of the visible serial numbers match. The late style, cap-head, buttplate and tang screws are correctly not serial numbered. The lower receiver tang is stamped with the "W" inspection mark used by Oliver Winchester. The Henry rifle was the most advanced rifle available during the Civil War. Although the Federal government purchased only 1,731 Henry rifles during the war, experts believe that the majority of the 9000+ Henry rifles manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company between during the Civil War years were purchased by individual Federal soldiers who wanted the firepower of a 15-shot repeating rifle. By 1864, many Federal soldiers in Western regiments were armed with privately purchased Henry rifles.
