This is a desirable and colorful variation of the First Model Schofield Single Action revolver. A total of 3,035 of these were manufactured in 1875 with seven inch barrels, walnut grips and blue finish. This revolver was one of a number that was purchased as surplus and had the barrel shortened to 5 inches for use by Wells Fargo agents. It has the standard two-line address/patent dates on the left side of the ejector housing and Schofield's patent information on the right. The right side of the ejector housing below the patent info is marked "W. F. & CO'S. EX." followed by a large "1494". The "1494" is the Wells Fargo & Company inventory number which matched the gun's serial number. The matching serial number is marked on the butt. The underside of the right grip panel is marked "743", and the left panel has a prior owner's name in pencil. The serial number on the rear cylinder face is double stamped. It has a round blade front and notch rear sights, blue finish with casehardened hammer and trigger guard and is fitted with smooth walnut grips.
Fine. The revolver retains 25% of the original blue finish (mostly confined to the frame) mixed with a gray or brown patina on the balance. The hammer and trigger guard retain traces of the original case colors. The grips are very good with some minor scratches overall and some lower edge wear. The markings are clear. The action is stiff but functional. A desirable and scarce revolver for any serious S&W collector or collectors of Wild West memorabilia.
