A) Engraved and L. Coon Marked Rifle with Heavy Barrel, Patch Box and German Silver Inlays

Manufacturer: Coon

Type: Rifle
Gauge: 45 percussion
Barrel: 35 1/4 inch octagon
Finish: bright
Grip:
Stock: walnut
Item Views: 1826
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 61
Class: Antique
Description:

Both rifles in this lot appear to have been manufactured in the mid-19th century in New York State. The top of the barrel of this rifle is marked "L. COON/WARRANTED". Levi Coon and his sons (including Levi Jr.) and along with other descendants are recorded as gunsmiths and barrel makers during the mid to late 19th century. This rifle was likely made by Levi Coon Sr. or built using a barrel made in his shop. It has a German silver blade front and elevation adjustable rear sights, an empty tap in the upper wrist likely for a peep sight, double set triggers and an initial plate hand marked "WMO". It has other German silver furniture including a squirrel on the cheek rest, a decorative side plate, escutcheons, a long plaque on the bottom of the forend and the forend cap. It also has brass furniture including the crescent buttplate, ramrod entry pipe, ornate trigger guard and the fine engraved patch box. There is also engraving on the lock, hammer, upper tang, bolster and on the barrel at the breech and muzzle. The barrel also has one golden and two German silver bands near the breech. It includes a ramrod that protrudes 2 inches from the front of the rifle with a ribbed tip and a worm on the tail end.

Rating Definition:

About good. The rifle has a mottled brown patina the primary components. The German silver components remain mostly bright with some golden patina or residue. The brass has an aged patina. The stock is fair with several repairs along the upper edges and cracks near the ramrod entry pipe. There are also some minor dings and scratches throughout. Mechanically needs attention but otherwise a fair example of 19th century craftsmanship.

B) N. Lewis Marked Rifle

Manufacturer: N. Lewis
Model: Percussion
Type: Rifle
Gauge: 38 Percussion
Barrel: 27 1/2 inch octagon
Finish: brown
Grip:
Stock: walnut
Item Views: 1826
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 61
Class: Antique
Description:

The only visible markings on this rifle are: "PAT. JAN. 29. 1906" on the rear sight and "N. LEWIS" on the top barrel flat just behind the rear sight. The former marking indicates that this sight was added later whereas the latter marking is likely for Nelson Lewis. Lewis was a gunmaker in the State of New York in the mid-19th century. It has been said that Lewis was incredibly particular in his rifling and ensured that he accurately fitted the bullet to the bore of each rifle. He reportedly went so far as never letting a rifle leave his shop until he could find an accurate load after multiple tests. This rifle is fitted with blade front and adjustable rear sporting sights (elevator absent). It has an engraved trigger guard, walnut stock with checkering at the wrist and a cheek rest and a striped wood ramrod with a tip absent. There is an empty tap on the barrel tang just above an unmarked initial plate likely for a peep sight. There is also a golden band on the barrel at the breech.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The rifle has a mixture of well retained brown finish with brown patina and light pitting. The wood is good with crisp checkering at the wrist, a small crack at the rear of the lock plate and minor dings and slight scratches scattered throughout. The action remains excellent.
