Description:

Manufactured by Swinburn & Son, this double barrel percussion rifle was invented by General John Jacob. An officer of the British East India Company, Jacob commanded a cavalry regiment called the 36th Jacob's Horse and founded the town Jacobabad in 1847 (now a city in Pakistan). The rifle he invented fired an explosive shell designed to explode ammunition carts at long distances. Silver blade front sight and 5 leaf rear sight graduated from 100-300. The heavy barrels with a raised matte solid rib and gauge at approximately .75 percussion caliber. The lock plates, hammers and trigger guard feature a floral scroll engraving with the lock plates signed "SWINBURN & SON." The nicely figured half stock features checkering on the forearm and wrist with an engraved patch box on the right side of the buttstock, single barrel wedge and a flat steel buttplate which has engraved scrollwork on the tang.

Rating Definition:

Very good as period refinished. The refinished barrels retain most of the blue finish which has taken on a deep plum appearance. The remaining metal surfaces retain traces of case colors in the protected areas, otherwise a smooth gray patina. There is some very scattered minor pitting. The signature and part of the engraving on the left lock plate has been remarked. The varnished stock is fine with a couple wood filled repairs. The checkering is crisp overall. Mechanically excellent.
