Description:

This is a very attractive pepper box pistol manufactured by one of the Harvey family gun makers in Exeter, Devon, England and is marked "Harvey EXETER" in contrasting script. The family is recorded in multiple period sources often under "Harvey & Son" at 68 South Street. Records indicate that some of their arms were presented to members of British royalty. The revolver has a casehardened cylinder/barrel assembly, hammer, trigger guard, and trigger. The sliding safety mechanism behind the hammer was niter blued while the frame, butt, and grip straps are German silver. There is light engraving at the muzzles and fine scroll work on the frame, grip straps, trigger guard, and butt. The top of the hammer has a twisted engraving pattern. The screw heads are also lightly engraved with complimentary patterns. The serial number is marked at the bottom of the front grip strap. It is fitted with finely checkered grips with small stud inlays. There are British in the flutes on the barrel assembly. It comes in a wooden display case with a fitted red velvet interior along with: a compartment containing six balls, one mini-ball, and the key; a small, unmarked powder flask; a ramrod with removable tip that reveals a threaded cleaning tip; and a bullet mold marked "No56".

Rating Definition:

Very fine. 75% plus of the case colors remain with most of the case colors very vivid for their age. There is some minor oxidation/pitting on the casehardened components and some minor scratches throughout. The grips are very good with some slight marks in the checkering and a small ding on the left side near the junction with the frame. Mechanically excellent with clear markings. The case is good with some shelf/storage type wear on the exterior, an aged patina to the brass initial plate and lock, and some fading and staining on the interior. The accessories are all fine. Overall, this is a very nice looking set built around a very fine pepperbox revolver made by an English family of expert gun makers.
