Description:

This is a longer than average example of a Northwest flintlock trade musket manufactured by the famous British company Barnett. This gun also has an interesting blend of later and older style features such as the later style carved stock and the earlier style lock plate and buttplate. The earlier style pointed tail lock plate is marked "BARNETT over 1806" behind the hammer with a "Fox/IB" proofmark struck below the pan. The latter marking was later changed to "EB" and used by the Hudson Bay Company after 1821 and likely relates to the North West Company prior to that year. The lock has a simple double line border whereas the cock does not (likely replaced). The upper left barrel flat is stamped with English proofs and a "*/RB" mark likely of one of the Barnetts. The top of the barrel is unmarked but is fitted with fixed blade front and notch rear sights. The ornate brass side plate has the classic serpent/dragon that is the distinctive mark of the Northwest gun. It also has the oversized trigger and trigger guard commonly seen on trade guns and is fitted on a full length stock with carved accents behind the plates and the barrel tang. The butt has a round stamp on the right side and a flat butt secured by pins at the back as is common on 18th century trade guns. It includes a ramrod with cleaning tip attached.

Rating Definition:

Good as reconverted to flintlock. The trigger guard, lock and barrel have mostly a brown patina with a few brighter spots. The brass components have an aged patina. All markings are legible aside from the circular mark on the right side of the butt. The stock is fair with some small repairs, a section worn through on the bottom below the ramrod, minor scratches and some dings. The barrel and lock are ill-fitting but not loose. This is an attractive piece in better condition than most.
