Description:

1) 1822 pattern officers sword, 37 1/2 inches overall with a 32 1/4 inch curved "pipe backed" blade, bearing the ciphers of Queen Victoria, which are repeated on the gilt brass hilt. The guard has a folding counter guard, treated canvas inner lining and a white leather sword knot, with sculpted designs on the back piece and a wire wrapped sharkskin grip. With a gilt brass fitted black leather scabbard. 2) C. Smith & Son (London) mameluke sword, 36 3/4 inches overall with a 31 1/2 inch curved etched blade with Victoria cipher, gilt brass dual quillion guard with sculpted designs, golden sword knot and a pair of smooth antique ivory grip panels with gilt floral pattern bolts. With a brass scabbard, which is stamped "25" of the flattened drag.

Rating Definition:

Very good, with patches of spotting on the blade, a few areas of pitting, mild wear and scuffs on the hilt and mild handling marks overall. The gilt components show over 90% of their original finish, with a fine patina on the exposed metal. The leather is good, with mild cracking and scuffs. 2) Fine. Some mild spotting is present on the blade, and over 80% of the original gilt finish remains on the hilt, with a well aged patina on the exposed sections. The outer jacket of the knot is fraying, exposing the still-whole internal cord. The grips are good, with some age cracks, shrinkage and fine aged color. The scabbard is very good, with mild dents and handling marks.
