Crossbows of this style were introduced in Germany circa 1600 and are commonly called "stone bows" as they were designed to fire stones or small balls as opposed to bolts or arrows and were used for sporting purposes. This example is marked "WILLOW/LONDON" and has engraved designs on many of the components.

It comes without a string. It is in very good condition for its age. The iron surfaces have a dark brown patina with mild pitting throughout, and the wood is mostly smooth with some minor scrapes and dings.
