Description:

This fine example of the Model 1855 is dated "1857" on the lock plate and "1858" on the barrel. It also has the standard Springfield markings and barrel proofs. It has a blade front and folding ladder long range rear sights graduated 1-4 on the base and to 8 on the ladder. It is mounted with a nearly full length straight wrist stock with three "U" marked barrel bands, a brass forend cap, sling swivels on the trigger guard and middle band, a tulip head ramrod with swelled shank, and a "US" marked buttplate. The Model 1855 was the first U.S. martial arm to use the 58 caliber Minie bullet and was one of the primary weapons of the Civil War even as it was replaced by the more reliable Model 1861.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The rifle has mostly bright surfaces with limited spotting and light scratches. The stock is very fine with no cartouches, a few superficial scratches and some scattered dents. Mechanically fine with clear markings.
