Description:

An estimated 5,151 later production Model 1855 percussion rifles were made at Harper's Ferry during the years leading up to the Civil War. With a 33 inch barrel, two barrel bands and an iron patch box manufactured by Harper's Ferry Armory from 1857 to 1861. The survival rate of these rifles is low given that many saw hard use throughout the war. The rifle is equipped with a blade front sight, two leaf rear sight and a bayonet lug. The "U.S./HARPER'S FERRY" and "American Eagle" motif on the lock, "U" marks on the barrel bands, and "U.S." on the buttplate remain legible, but the other markings have been obliterated. It includes a tulip head iron ramrod with a swollen shaft, sling swivel studs are on the front of the trigger guard and front barrel band, and is mounted with a straight grip stock with a carbine buttplate, two cartouches on the left flat and "W J P" carved into the left side of the butt. This example has a brass forend cap and iron remaining parts.

Rating Definition:

About good. The rifle shows honest wear from wartime use and has an even untouched dark brown patina with pitting and oxidation especially at the breech. The stock is also good with some cracks, dings, scratches, and sections worn or absent near the breech on the right side. Mechanically fine. Looks like it just came out of an attic!
