Gauge: 58
Barrel: 32 1/2 inch round

Description:

Blade front and long range folding leaf rear sights, with "W W/P" and "V/P/(eagle head)" on the upper left side of the barrel, "1853" on the tang, "(American eagle)/US" on the lock ahead of the hammer and "HARPERS/FERRY/1854" to the rear. A saber bayonet lug has been secured to the right side of the muzzle and the bore expanded to 58 caliber, suggesting post-1855 rework. Smooth straight wrist stock, with a brass tipped trumpet head ramrod, two brass barrel bands, sling swivels, long brass patch box with spare nipple and a flat brass buttplate marked "K.72" on the heel. The "K.72" is unidentified, and may be a rack or inventory number.

Rating Definition:

Good. The steel components show a mixed brown and gray patina, with mild pitting around the muzzle and nipple. The stock is good, with part of the front barrel band retention spring absent, mild cracks and chips around the upper tang, light sanding and a few dings and scuffs. Mechanically fine.
