Description:

S.C. Robinson and later the Confederate government manufactured carbines modeled after the Model 1859 Sharps in Richmond, Virginia during the war. This example is the late example is serial number 4962 of just over 5,000 made. With only "RICHMOND VA." marked on the barrel and serial number on the lock plate, upper tang and barrel. It has a straight wrist stock with slightly curved brass buttplate and forearm that has since been floated by leather pieces adhered underneath and held by a single brass barrel band. These carbines were less crudely built than many other Confederate weapons but still saw extremely hard service during the war.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The iron surfaces display an artificial brown patina with some brighter spots, patches of oxidation and pitting and traces of blue finish. There are various minor marks, scratches and dings scattered throughout. The brass has an aged patina with some verdigris and reddish discoloration. The stock and forearm have several cracks along with numerous scrapes, scuffs, dents and pressure marks and the forearm is loose. Mechanically fine. The front band is a modern replacement.
