Description:

This percussion musket is built with mostly Palmetto Armory Model 1841 features including the two brass barrel bands (dual banded front), front sight, patch box, trigger guard and buttplate. It is also equipped with a fixed notch rear sight. Unlike a standard Model 1841, the barrel has a larger bore (close to .60) and appears smooth indicating that it may have been re-bored during the war or thereafter. The lock plate is marked "COLUMBIA/S.C. 1852" vertically behind the hammer and "PALMETTO ARMORY S*C" in a circle around the palm tree emblem ahead. The barrel near the breech has a visible "V" and the Palmetto emblem with "Wm GLAZE & CO." markings on the left flat. "63" is marked on the patch box and under "SC" (restamped over the original "US" stamp) on the buttplate tang. A straight shank ramrod with threaded brass tip is included. Palmetto Armory weapons were made for the South Carolina militia and many saw use during the Civil War. Sherman's forces are known to have destroyed many at Citadel College in February 1865.

Rating Definition:

Fair for Confederate weapon. The barrel has a mixture of bright metal and significant moderate to deep pitting. The sections near the barrel bands are smoother than the rest. The action is less pitted with some bright areas and a brown patina. The brass has an aged patina. The stock is fair with many cracks, chips and absent slivers along with some gouges, scrapes and strike marks. Mechanically fine.
