Description:

This interesting musketoon has a 33 inch smooth bore barrel with a blade front sight in a stud and three leaf folding rear sight. The barrel is fitted to an altered U.S. Model 1855 type walnut stock with iron patch box and buttplate, one iron barrel band with "U" on the left side, and a dual band brass forend piece with a sling swivel similar to what is often seen on J.P. Murray Musketoons. The second sling swivel is mounted to the front of the trigger guard. The barrel has "V/P/eagle head' inspection and proofmarks near the breech on the upper left flat and a mostly obliterated date stamp on top. The lock plate has the Richmond Armory "Type II" characteristics of a hump between the hammer and bolster, "1862" marked vertically behind the hammer, and "C.S./RICHMOND V.A." at the front. Many Confederate Arms were made in Richmond after Confederate forces captured the Harpers Ferry Armory in April 1861. They used captured materials including forgings, dies, parts and surviving rifles to construct weapons for the Southern war effort.

Rating Definition:

Good as assembled/altered potentially in period for Confederate use. The iron surfaces have primarily a mottled brown patina with some oxidation and pitting particularly near the breech. The brass dual barrel band has an aged patina. The rear barrel band is marred on the edges. The modified wood is fair with mostly smooth surfaces aside from some minor scrapes and a few small dings. The original band spring slot has been filled. Mechanically fine with clear markings.
