Description:

Made between 1861 to 1863, this Moore, in addition to a fine New York style punch-dot backed scroll engraving on the frame, is inscribed on the back strap "Segt Wm Crounse/Co. B 10th Regt. N.Y.N.G./from his Father and youngest Brother" between areas of floral and scroll engraving. Based on archival records (consignor supplied copies included) William Crounse mustered in on a 9 month contract as a Sergeant in Company B of the 177th Regiment. Crounse's service came to an end on June 28, 1863 in Louisiana, due to "general debility", having succumbed to an unspecified ailment. Active in Louisiana under Sherman, the 177th participated in the Siege of Port Hudson (May-July 1963). We have no explanation for the discrepancy in the inscription, which may be an engraver error or a mistake on the original buyers part. Pin front and hammer notch rear sights, with "D. MOORE PATENT SEPT. 18. 1860" on the top barrel flat, bored-through cylinder, checkered cylinder release, and smooth grips.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel shows 50% of the original blue finish, with areas of brown patina, bright edge wear and scattered spotting. The cylinder has turned a mixed brown and gray overall with traces of blue and scattered spotting. The frame retains 95% of the attractively patina silver, with some handling marks and edge wear. The varnished grip is excellent, with some light dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
