Description:

Colt Model 1860 Army revolver manufactured in 1864 with factory case and accessories. The revolver has the Colt high polish commercial blue finish on the barrel, cylinder and back strap. The loading lever, frame and hammer are casehardened and the brass trigger guard is silver-plated. The one-piece walnut grip has a high polish piano finish. The revolver has a three-screw frame with stock lug cuts in the recoil shields and a notch in the bottom of the back strap. The barrel has a nickel-silver front sight blade and the hammer has borderless knurling on the spur. The rebated cylinder is roll-engraved with the Texas Navy battle scene and "COLTS PATENT NO/PATENTED SEPT.10TH 1850". "COLTS/PATENT" is stamped in two-lines on the left side of the frame and "44 CAL" is stamped on the left shoulder of the trigger guard. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "-ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-". The serial number, "150067" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap. "S" is stamped below the frame, trigger guard and back strap serial numbers. The side of the cylinder is stamped with the partial serial number "0067". All of the visible serial numbers match. The revolver has a factory mahogany American style case with six compartments lined with crimson velvet. The case contains a 250 count tin of Eley percussion caps with brown paper label, two sealed six round packets of .44 caliber combustible cartridges made by the American Cartridge Company and the Mount Pleasant Cartridge Company, stand of flags pattern, "COLT'S PATENT", powder flask for Model 1851 Navy and Model 1860 Army revolvers with short Navy charger (Rapley #F16), blued, iron, double cavity, bow-leg bullet mold marked "COLT'S/PATENT" on the top of the spruce cutter and "44H" and "D" on the right block, L-shaped combination screw-driver/nipple wrench, pewter Dixon & Sons oil bottle, key and assorted .44 caliber round balls and conical bullets. Most Colt Model 1860 Army revolvers manufactured during the Civil War were for Ordnance Department contracts, factory cased Model 1860 Army revolvers are scarce.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as partially period refinished. The revolver retains more than 90% of the high polish blue and casehardened finish. Most of the high polish blue is present on the barrel with some thinning on the right side. The cylinder has been period re-blued and retains about 75% of the roll-engraved naval scene. Traces of pitting are visible beneath the finish. The percussion nipples show light to moderate flash pitting and five of the six safety pins remain intact. The loading lever, frame and hammer retains more than 90% of the fiery case colors, with some silvering on the recoil shields and loading lever. The brass trigger guard has traces of the delicate silver plating remaining in protected areas. The one-piece walnut grip is in excellent condition and retains nearly 98% of the high polish piano finish. The factory case is in very good overall condition. Exterior wear is limited to a few shallow handling and storage marks. The velvet lining has faded slightly but is clean and with no significant wear. The accessories are in good to very good condition. The labels on the cap tin are faded but intact. The Mount Pleasant cartridge packet is in excellent condition and the American Powder Co., packet is sealed and appears to be in good condition. The powder flask is in very good to good condition with about 75% of the brown lacquer finish remaining on the body and several minor dents in the back of the flask. The bullet mold is in very good condition and retains most of the dull blue finish with some scattered age discoloration. Both the combination wrench and oil bottle remain in very good condition. This is a very fine example of a cased, 1864 commercial production Colt Model 1860 Army revolver with accessories.
