Description:

In the 1850s, unauthorized copies of Colt revolver were showing up around the world. Samuel Colt worked to patent his revolvers in various countries and to bring suits against the forgers, but he could not keep pace with his adversaries. Instead, he offered to set up licensing agreements by which other companies could produce copies using some parts made by Colt or those entirely of their own manufacture by paying Colt a royalty for each revolver. In return, he withdrew infringement cases. The result was a large number of "Colt Brevete" revolvers made in Europe, especially Belgium, that are very similar or identical to those produced in the U.S. This Dragoon sized revolver clearly draws from Colt's designs and gauges at .34 caliber and is designed for rimfire ammunition. It has European style scroll work engraving on the barrel at the breech and muzzle, a Cavalry and Indian battle cylinder roll scene, pinched blade front and notch rear sights, trigger guard with spur and a long, one-piece grip with floral scroll carving. There is a "4" marked on rear cylinder face and back of the barrel lug along with a "20" on the front of the barrel lug. There are no maker's marks, but the cylinder has a Liege proofmark. An ejector rod is fitted to the underside of the barrel.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel retains 80% of the original blue finish with some edge wear, spotting and a few light scratches. The frame and other remaining components have some traces of the faded case colors with primarily a gray patina with some marks, scratches and light spotting. The grip is very good with crisp carved designs and a few chips on the lower edges. Mechanically excellent with crisp engraving. Overall, a very attractive revolver with Colt inspired designs.
